Measure Your Window Before Choosing a Crystal Suncatcher

A crystal can look small in a product photo and still hang lower than you expect. The prism is only part of the piece; a chain and decorative beads can add to the drop. Before choosing a window prism, take a minute to measure the space where you want it to hang.

Measure the space it will use

Start at the exact spot where the hook will go. Measure down to the sill or anything the ornament might touch. Then open the window and move the blind or curtain as you normally would. Leave room so the crystal does not knock against the glass, a latch, or a moving shade.

When you read a product page, look for three different measurements: the crystal size, the ornament height, and the chain length. A 20 mm crystal does not mean the entire ornament hangs only 20 mm below its hook.

For example, CrystalPlace's clear crystal ball ornament lists a 20 mm prism, a 3-inch ornament height, and an attached 10-inch chain. The clear almond prism ornament lists a 50 mm prism, a 5-inch ornament height, and an attached 10-inch chain. Those numbers describe different parts of each piece. Hold a tape measure at your proposed hook point to picture the full drop before you order.

Choose the shape for the space

The smaller ball gives you a compact accent. The almond has a longer, more noticeable silhouette. Neither shape guarantees a bigger rainbow just because it is larger. The light reaching the crystal, its facets, and the surface where the color lands all affect what you see.

If colorful reflections are your goal, check whether direct sun actually reaches that part of the window during the day. Crystal suncatchers can still be attractive in softer light, but a shaded window may not throw bright patches of color across the room.

Three checks before you buy

  • Height: Will the ornament and chain clear the sill and anything below the hook?
  • Movement: Can the window, blind, and curtain move without striking the crystal?
  • Light: Does sun reach the hanging spot at a time you will enjoy it?

Choose a secure support suited to the ornament's weight, and check the clearance again after hanging it. A little measuring now makes it easier to enjoy the crystal where you planned to put it.
